Flaxseed guidance needs to cover not only pressing but also freshness, quick post-press handling, and a line that protects sensitive premium product requirements.
Flaxseed oil contains ~57% alpha-linolenic acid (ALA, omega-3), making it the most oxidation-prone common food oil. Peroxide value can double within days of air exposure. Every second between pressing and sealed storage matters.
The flaxseed cold-press page lists flaxseed among recommended oilseeds. 100 kg/barrel, ~2 h per barrel, 4.5 h for 2 barrels with loading. No pre-heating — ALA degrades above 40°C, so the entire chain must stay below that threshold.
Cold-pressed flaxseed oil must be filled in dark glass with N₂ headspace and stored refrigerated. Shelf life is typically 3–6 months — compared to 12–24 months for most other cold-pressed oils. This dictates batch size, bottling cadence, and distribution logistics.
Flaxseed oil has a smoke point of only ~107°C and is sold as a dietary omega-3 supplement, salad dressing ingredient, or functional food additive — never for frying. The marketing and packaging must reflect this niche.
Process map
The press is one node inside a seed-specific process. When upstream prep is weak, downstream yield and filtration become unpredictable.
Flaxseed that has been stored warm or damp already has elevated peroxide precursors. Check harvest date, storage temperature, and moisture. Reject lots stored above 15 °C for more than 6 months without climate control.
Remove stones, dust, and foreign material. Crush or flake the seed gently for barrel loading. Any friction heat above 40 °C begins degrading ALA. Monitor temperature at the crusher discharge.
370–630 ton downforce, no pre-heating. Residual oil in cake ≤5%. The 2-hour cycle is not a bottleneck — flaxseed batch size should match the bottling cadence (small bottles, short shelf life), not warehouse inventory targets.
Plate-and-frame or bag filtration immediately post-press. Oil must not sit in open trays or pass through carbon-steel piping. Transfer to N₂-purged stainless tank; keep headspace oxygen below 2%.
100–500 ml dark glass bottles, nitrogen flush before capping. Label with pressing date and expiry (3–6 months). Ship via cold-chain or advise retailers to refrigerate. Shelf presence beyond 6 months is not credible for cold-pressed flaxseed oil.
Control points
Freshness, storage, and careful handling matter because flaxseed oil buyers often care about a delicate premium product, not only about extracting any oil possible from the seed.
With flaxseed, low-temperature positioning only sounds credible when cleaning, pressing, filtration, storage, and packaging choices all support the same requirements. The press is essential, but it is not the only proof point.
Batch-to-batch consistency comes from material grading, stable moisture, and a clear rule for when to recondition instead of forcing a cycle.
